Start with the fact that strands the most visitors: Anping Old Street is not a night market. Shutters start coming down around five or six, and by seven the street is down to scattered lights. So run Anping backwards — finish the Old Street before dusk, and when the sky goes dark, hand the night to the canal.
Dusk: Before the Street Closes
Enter the Old Street around four or five — candied fruit, shrimp crackers, the fort perimeter — then drift toward the canal at sundown. The gold light on the water is Anping’s most photogenic ten minutes of the day.
